10 Questions to Ask a Cleveland Sober Living Home Before You Move In

Choosing a sober living home is a meaningful step. You may be looking for structure, safety, connection, and a place where you can breathe a little easier. If you’re LGBTQ+ or an ally, you also deserve to know that your identity will be respected, not questioned, minimized, or treated as a problem.
Before moving into any Cleveland sober living home, take time to ask questions. The right home should welcome your questions with patience and clear answers.
B. Riley House is the only LGBTQ+ treatment center in Ohio. We support LGBTQ+ individuals and allies through affirming recovery housing, treatment, mental health care, and community. Since 2016, we’ve served more than 300 clients annually, with a 90%+ six-month retention rate among people who complete programming.
Here are 10 questions to bring with you as you explore sober living in Cleveland, Ohio.

1. Is the home truly LGBTQ+ affirming?
A home may say it welcomes everyone. That’s a good beginning, but you deserve to learn what inclusion looks like in daily life.
Ask:
- Do you openly serve LGBTQ+ residents and allies?
- How do you support gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and nonbinary residents?
- Are chosen names and pronouns respected?
- Is there a written nondiscrimination policy?
- How are concerns about harassment or discrimination handled?
Affirming care should be more than a phrase on a website. It should be part of the home’s culture, expectations, staff practices, and community relationships.
At B. Riley House, LGBTQ+ identity is not something you need to explain away before receiving support. You’re welcome to bring your whole self through the door.
2. How do you support transgender and nonbinary residents?
If you’re transgender or nonbinary, ask direct questions about privacy, safety, room assignments, bathrooms, clothing, and how staff respond to concerns.
You might ask:
- How are room assignments handled?
- Are residents addressed by their chosen name and pronouns?
- What happens if another resident is disrespectful?
- How do you protect privacy in shared spaces?
- Can staff support conversations related to gender identity and transition?
You shouldn’t have to choose between recovery and dignity. A safe sober living home will be willing to discuss these details respectfully and without making you feel difficult for asking.
3. What training does the staff have?
Recovery support works best when staff understand both addiction and the experiences that may shape LGBTQ+ people’s lives.
Ask whether staff have training or experience related to:
- LGBTQ+ cultural awareness
- Trauma-informed support
- Coming out and family relationships
- Self-acceptance
- Transgender issues
- Minority stress and discrimination
- Mental health and substance use
At B. Riley House, our services include mental health assessment and treatment, along with psychotherapy that can address self-acceptance, coming out, and transgender issues. Our goal is whole-person care, support that makes room for your recovery, identity, relationships, and hopes for the future.
4. What services are available if I need more than housing?
Sober living and clinical treatment are not the same thing. Recovery housing may provide structure, peer connection, house expectations, and access to meetings. It does not automatically replace professional treatment.
Ask:
- Is clinical treatment available at the same organization?
- Are PHP or IOP services available?
- Can I receive mental health assessment or therapy?
- What happens if my needs change after I move in?
- Can you help connect me with affirming providers?
B. Riley House offers a full treatment continuum in Cleveland, including residential substance-use treatment, partial hospitalization programming (PHP), intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), mental health services, psychiatry, and LGBTQ+-affirming therapy. Our services page explains how these options differ.
5. What is the full cost, and what does it include?
Financial clarity can help you feel more secure before move-in. Ask for a written breakdown of all costs.
Questions may include:
- What is the monthly rent?
- Are utilities, food, transportation, or internet included?
- Is there an application or deposit fee?
- Are drug testing or other services billed separately?
- What happens if I need to leave early?
- Do you accept insurance for treatment services?
B. Riley House works with extensive insurance partnerships for Cleveland treatment programs. Benefits and eligibility vary, so our admissions team can help you understand what may apply to your situation. You’re welcome to ask questions before making a decision.

6. What are the house rules and daily expectations?
Clear expectations can make recovery feel steadier. They can also help you decide whether a home fits your needs and values.
Ask to review the written rules before moving in. These may cover:
- Curfew
- Chores
- Visitors and overnight guests
- Required meetings
- Transportation
- Employment or school expectations
- Medication storage
- Substance testing
- Privacy and confidentiality
- Dating and relationships within the home
A supportive home should explain the rules plainly. You should know what is expected, what support is available, and how concerns are addressed.
7. What happens if someone relapses or experiences a mental health crisis?
Recovery is a journey. It can include difficult days, setbacks, strong emotions, or moments when you need more help.
Ask:
- What is the response to a relapse?
- Is there a safety plan?
- Can residents receive referrals to a higher level of care?
- Are mental health concerns handled with compassion?
- Is removal from the home automatic, or are there steps for support?
Every home has its own policies. What matters is that the answer is clear, safe, and respectful. You deserve to know how the team responds when life becomes hard.
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For urgent mental health support in the United States, call or text 988.
8. How do you handle medications and ongoing medical care?
Ask how the home supports residents who take prescribed medication, including medication used in addiction treatment. You may also want to understand medication storage, refills, appointments, and transportation.
Questions include:
- Can I continue prescribed medications?
- How are medications stored?
- Who helps with appointments or refills?
- Can I continue care with my current provider?
- What happens if I need psychiatric support?
Do not feel pressured to hide your medical needs. A careful admissions conversation should help you understand what the home can support and when outside care may be needed.
9. How will I connect with LGBTQ+ recovery community in Cleveland?
Connection can make a powerful difference. Ask how the home helps residents build healthy relationships and find support beyond the house.
You might ask about:
- LGBTQ+-affirming recovery meetings
- Community events
- Therapy groups
- Peer support
- Alumni connection
- Local LGBTQ+ organizations
- Family or ally support
B. Riley House offers free recovery meetings open to the community and allies. Meeting times can change, so please contact us to confirm details before attending.
You deserve recovery spaces where you can be honest, supported, and free to be loved as you are.

10. Can I speak with someone who has lived there?
If possible, ask whether you can hear from a current or former resident. Personal experiences may help you understand the home’s atmosphere in a way that brochures and policies cannot.
You can ask:
- Did you feel safe and respected?
- Were LGBTQ+ identities treated with care?
- Did staff listen when you had a concern?
- Did the house help you build daily stability?
- What do you wish you had known before moving in?
Privacy matters, so a home may not be able to share personal information without permission. Still, the way staff respond to this question can tell you a lot about their openness and respect for residents.
Look for a home where you can belong
When you search for “LGBTQ+ sober living near me” or “sober living houses Cleveland Ohio,” you may find many different options. Take your time comparing them. Ask questions more than once if you need to. Bring a trusted person to the conversation if that feels helpful.
Look for a home that offers safety, structure, compassion, and genuine respect. Look for people who understand that identity and recovery are connected parts of your life: not separate boxes.
